Litres, gallons, and the US vs UK difference
The litre (L) is the standard metric unit of volume. A US gallon = 3.785 L, while a UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 L — nearly 20% larger. This distinction matters for fuel economy: a car that does 30 mpg (US) is actually less efficient than one doing 30 mpg (UK). Always confirm which gallon a source uses.
Volume in cooking
Cooking uses a wide variety of volume units: teaspoons (5 mL), tablespoons (15 mL), cups (approximately 240 mL in the US), pints, quarts, and gallons. UK and US cup sizes differ slightly — a UK cup is 284 mL. For consistent results in baking, weighing dry ingredients in grams is more accurate than measuring by volume.
Scientific and industrial volumes
In chemistry and medicine, volumes are measured in millilitres (mL) and microlitres (µL). The cubic metre (m³) is used in large-scale industrial and civil engineering contexts — for example, measuring river flow, reservoir capacity, and concrete pours. 1 m³ = 1,000 litres.
