About Speed Conversions
Miles per hour versus kilometres per hour
Road speed limits are shown in mph in the UK and USA, and in km/h in most of the rest of the world. The conversion is: 1 mph = 1.609 km/h, or roughly "multiply mph by 1.6 to get km/h." A 70 mph motorway limit is 113 km/h; a 100 km/h autobahn limit is about 62 mph.
Knots in aviation and maritime navigation
A knot is one nautical mile per hour (1.852 km/h or 1.151 mph). Nautical miles and knots were adopted because they relate directly to degrees of latitude — one nautical mile equals one arcminute of latitude — making navigation calculations simpler. Aircraft airspeed and ship speed are still universally measured in knots.
The speed of sound and Mach numbers
The speed of sound varies with altitude and air temperature — at sea level at 15 °C it is approximately 343 m/s, 1,235 km/h, or 767 mph. Mach 1 represents this speed; Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound. The Concorde cruised at approximately Mach 2, while space shuttles re-entered the atmosphere at around Mach 25.
